Sturgeon Victim Services looking for advocates

Morinville – A local group is looking for a helping hand to offer victims of crime or crisis a helping hand through times of trouble. Sturgeon Victim Services, a volunteer-run organization that operates year round and 24 hours a day in connection with the RCMP, are often called upon to immediately work with victims when an incident occurs or within a day or two, depending on the assessed need.
In addition to offering 24-hour crisis response support, SVS Program Coordinator Donna McPherson said the organization deals with post trauma support, bereavement support, court accompaniment, and providing basic information on general RCMP procedures and referrals to other agencies, including the food bank and other social agencies. It is not uncommon for advocates to stay in contact with victim for as long as two years, particularly when assisting victims through the court process. … […]

Gibbons — The Sunflower Community Resource Program, located in Gibbons, is a one-stop provider of community resource information to those who need it. The program is a partnership between Sturgeon County, Bon Accord, Gibbons, Legal, Morinville, Redwater and the Sturgeon School Division, and is funded by Alberta Child and Family Services’ Early Intervention Initiatives (EII).

The resource centre held a joint open house with Sturgeon Family Literacy and Sturgeon Adult Learning Thursday, offering clients, residents, service providers and partners a look at the services each offers to the region. Ladouceur and Holmes win in election recounts

Morinville – The Morinville 2013 civic election saw candidates beating out their competitors by only a handful of votes and not many residents will appreciate the close race as much as newly elected Mayor Lisa Holmes and town council member Rob Ladouceur. The initial count done on Monday, Oct. 21, provided tight results with Holmes ahead of opponent Sheldon Fingler by eighteen votes. Because of the close difference, Fingler’s agent immediately requested a recount. Jackie Luker made it into the sixth and final council seat ahead of Ladouceur by two votes and because the difference between the candidates was within five votes, an automatic recount was scheduled.
On Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, the town conducted both recounts. Holmes retained her victory with 1034 votes over Fingler’s. However, the results did not favour Luker who received 684 votes to Ladouceur’s 689… […]
