Morinville – Three local women have combined their talents with their passion for a worthy cause to promote an upcoming concert with up-and-coming rock/pop band Rend. The Morinville Festival Society is looking to help families beat the winter blahs by taking one of Canada’s great pastimes indoors. In their first mini-festival outside the annual St. Jean Baptiste Festival, the society is bringing a street hockey skills competition to the cultural centre Jan. 26, tying the event to the Will Stroet children’s concert taking place the same day. Merchants ready to say goodbye to the penny

Morinville – In 2012 the Government announced it would phase out the penny this year due to the rising costs of minting the coin and the fact large quantities of the coin were sitting inside jars in Canadian households instead of flowing through the country’s cash registers. Estimating an annual savings of $11 million per year, the Government set a transition date of Feb. 4 to begin ridding the country of the penny.
