Editorial: Time to rein in human rights commissions

There are two things sure to draw the attention and repartee of a stand-up comedian: a fat guy in a Hawaiian shirt sitting ring side and two women kissing in the front row, particularly two heckling and kissing women in the front row. Either scenario is likely to draw a rapid fire, profanity-laced response from the comedian whose job it is to berate those in the establishment to amuse those who have come to see the comedy show…. Editorial: Car washes and the demon liquor

Council Chambers were packed with the righteously indignant on two consecutive evenings last week. At issue was an appeal to thwart the plans of long-time businessmen Guy Meunier to convert his car wash into a small liquor store and his plans to serve beer along with his burgers in his restaurant.

Meunier followed procedure and the Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) authorized a development permit, a situation that raised the ire of a daycare, neighbouring parents and members of the Morinville Christian Fellowship School… […]

Editorial: Daisies and attack ads

It’s 1964 and a little girl stands in a field of daisies. She’s holding one in her hand and like all children of that era; she makes her own entertainment with the flower. She begins to pluck off a petal at a time, counting down one by one. But soon, the little girl’s out of sequence counting is replaced with the countdown of an adult, finger on the button of a nuclear warhead, ready to launch the world into certain Armageddon … […]

Letter: Voter asks what MP Storseth has done for us lately

Dear Editor,

With the Federal Election thrust upon us, I have started to research candidates in our area. It can be difficult living in a province and area that has a PC blue voting mentality built into its culture. As a fiscal conservative and social liberal, I find the culture of voting for the same party frightening. Where is the accountability for our politicians in Alberta to do the very best job or be voted out? […]

Editorial: Sturgeon County has deep pockets and short arms

Four guys go out for dinner and everyone eats an equal share of the food served up, but when the bill comes, one guy starts squirming and making excuses about what his actual share of the bill is. After much argument, stalling and bafflegab, he reluctantly opens his wallet and lays out some cash, an amount that is a fraction of the value of the food he’s just ate… […]

Resident concerned about potential cultural centre noise

Dear editor:

As the May / June deadline for the opening approaches, I’m sure this centre will attract a lot of media attention, hopefully not for the wrong reasons. The planning and hastily positioning of this centre has been flawed from the start. Placing it only metres from an R-1 Residential area with no protection from the noises which will emanate from this facility has potentially set this venue and its users up for constant conflict with local neighbours of 99A and 99 Ave. This can be no surprise to the Town Office as I personally presented this issue, prior to construction, to the Developmental Permit Board, Town Council and during an appeal against the building permit being issued, where I actually won the argument on potential noise. But the permit was allowed to stand… […]

A Town Divided: An Editorial Film

By Stephen Dafoe

This editorializing will be brief as the meat of what I want to say is better shown by the 70 minute news film I’ve produced on the Morinville schools issue. What remains to be said is why I put it all together… […]

Editorial: Closed door meetings and door knocking censuses

Two days after Education Minister Dave Hancock met with board members from Greater St. Albert Regional Catholic Division No. 29 (GSACRD), it came out that one of the commitments made to the minister was GSACRD would conduct an impartial survey of Morinville parents as to the extent of interest in secular education. .. Letter: Satisfied parents respond to Morinville school issue

Dear Editor:

The debate over secular education in Greater St. Albert Catholic Regional Division (GSACRD) has caused many to take a closer look at how education is delivered in the communities of Morinville and Legal. Emotion aside, the facts need to be paramount to this discussion. Many people have made a conscious decision to choose Morinville and Legal as their home. In order to accommodate such a diverse group of people, our Public/Catholic system clearly “Welcomes students… […]

Editorial: Lights, camera, council

Morinville Town Council meets every two weeks to discuss town business, and while many of those meetings can be similar to watching paint dry, they are no different than meetings companies and organizations all across this province have on a day-to-day basis. Certain stuff must be dealt with and some of that stuff is slow moving… […]

Letter: Business owner grateful for community help

Dear editor:

There have been many times when generous people in the community have come to the aid of Smith Music. From the time the old convent was sold and many arts groups including Smith Music were “homeless” and threatened with insurmountable economic odds… […]
