Column: Snark one up for the Wildrose

One of the last things Premier Stelmach said in his recent announcement about stepping down as PC leader was that the next provincial election would see US wedge-style politics being used to attack personalities. He was, of course, referring to the Wildrose party; a party whom he defined … […]

Editorial: Now is the winter of our discon-scent

Those of you who follow what’s going on in Morinville know that at the first council meeting after the election Deputy Mayor Paul Krauskopf directed Champion Petfoods President Frank Burdzy to come back to council in January with something concrete on what the company was going to do about a certain olfactory by-product of its cooking process… […]

Editorial: Religion, rights and common sense

A MorinvilleNews.com editorial

Never discuss religion, politics or sex – three topics to be avoided if one has an ounce of common sense. At least that was the wisdom of years gone by, wisdom largely ignored by newspapers even back in the day when large cumbersome print publications were viable concerns. It is wisdom ignored even more so in today’s publishing reality where newspaper stalwarts of years gone by have been forced to put celebrities and political scandals on their front pages to attract a younger demographic and dirt-craving public… […]

Archie Bunker would be in Dire Straights today

A MorinvilleNews.com editorial

An interesting coincidence occurred last Wednesday. The day marked the 40th anniversary of the airing of the first episode of All in the Family, a show that broke new ground in its depiction of racism, feminism, the Vietnam War and other touchy topics, including homosexuality. Last Wednesday was also the day that the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) decided that the … […]

Editorial: Rebranding vs. reality

By Stephen Dafoe

Throughout the 2011 budget discussions we heard much about the need to hire a number of positions for the soon-to-be completed Community Cultural Centre. Suggestions that perhaps some positions could be part time or filled by contract workers were met with the rebuttal that it was crucial that the facility be properly staffed to leave the right impression to those visiting the facility. Do half a job and Morinville and its new… […]

Exotic animal ban much ado about nothing

A Morinvillenews.com editorial

By Stephen Dafoe

In a slow news week television news programs need to fill the same time slot that they do when the streets are flush with stories. It is therefore no surprise that a story about Morinville’s potential banning of elephants, armadillos and other exotic animals would find itself on the tube last week, complete with accompanying footage of Godzilla terrorizing Tokyo and that scene from Jumanji where the elephants were running wild in the streets.

Morinville has a year to look forward to

MorinvilleNews.com Editorial

By Stephen Dafoe

With Christmas 2010 behind us, we are all on the rapid road to New Year’s Eve and the changing of the calendar year. Out with the old and in with the new, as the idiom goes. But with respect to Morinville, 2011 will very much be a year of remembering and preserving the old while welcoming the new. While the sash-wearing baby in a top hat may be chomping at the bit to arrive Jan. 1, father time is not necessarily being shown the door.

Letter: Reader has questions on 2011 budget

Dear Editor:

I worked for the Provincial Government in various departments/ministries for 36 years in the budgeting field. For the first 15 or 20 years, I was in the so called “main” budgeting office receiving budgeting requests from the various departments of each Ministry. These would have to be reviewed closely prior to being presented to the Deputy Minister, then the Minister … […]

Letter: Heartland Transmission Project bad for business

Is ghastly and gruesome really Halloween

MorinvilleNews.com Editorial
By Stephen Dafoe

I suppose it was inevitable in a world where people eat the reproductive organs of animals on national television for fun, profit and their entitled fifteen minutes of fame that Halloween would follow the same path of over the top shock-value as everything else.
