Letter: Is a “Turning the Key” Approach to the Photo Enforcement Contract our best option?

Mayor, Town council and fellow Citizens of Morinville:

Before I begin with my comments on the Request for Proposal (RFP) going out to the Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) contractors I would like to acknowledge and praise Deputy Mayor Gord Putnam for asking for an addition to the proposal which was to include better “public interface and education” in the RFP. I would also like to praise Councillor Barry Turner and Councillor Stephen Dafoe for wanting to open the RFP to all contractors and not just those who offer the “Full Turn Key” solution… […]

Council seeking photo enforcement proposals

by Tristan Turner

Morinville – Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) contractors could soon be presenting their offers to the Town of Morinville after Council voted 5-0 in favour of sending out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the service. The RFP follows the Town’s purchasing policy and, because an annual photo enforcement contract is typically greater than $75,000 per year, the RFP will also be submitted on the Alberta Connect Website in accordance to the internal trade agreement (TILMA) guidelines… […]

Letter: MORINVILLE 2014 first quarter 2014 traffic statistics

At a recent Council meeting, Administration presented the Town’s 2014 First Quarter Statistics on photo radar tickets issued in Morinville.

Now those of you who have been following the photo radar saga in our community will remember that the recent ill-fated petition push was brought about because some residents, although not against photo radar per se, were against both the manner it was being employed as well as some of the locations receiving the most attention… […]

Horse before the cart approach to photo enforcement review

To the Mayor, Council, and fellow citizens

After attending the council meeting last night (13 May 2014), I have some concerns with regards to the review schedule presented to council by Mr. Schaefer. My biggest concern and one which should concern us all is no formal public consultation until after the enforcement contract is awarded. I would compare this to tendering a bid for a contractor to build a house with no blueprints, you don’t know what you’re going to get. … […]

Current photo radar contract will continue on month-to-month basis

by Tristan Turner

Morinville – The Town’s contract with Edmonton-based Independent Traffic Services (ITS) will continue on a month-to-month basis while Council considers potential changes to the photo radar program, including who will provide the service. In their first meeting since the Apr. 14 plebiscite that saw voters narrowly cast their ballots in favour of keeping photo radar, Council voted unanimously in favour of going forward a month at a time. ITS’ contract with the Town ended in December but was extended until Apr. 30 to continue the program pending the results of the vote…. […]

by Calli Stromner

Almost 1,200 Morinville voters turned out to cast their ballot in the Apr. 14 plebiscite to determine the fate of photo traffic enforcement, with just over 55 % of electors choosing to keep the controversial traffic enforcement tactic… […]

Letter: Ask the experts

Morinville residents who attend this weekend’s Morinville Trade Show have the opportunity to get information and to ask questions on photo radar enforcement at the Town of Morinville’s booth. It is time to separate FACT from FICTION. There seems to be a consistent message in the media comments made by those opposed to photo speed enforcement. They want you to vote “yes” to eliminating it! Their suggestion is that the RCMP and Community Peace Officers fill the void left by the removal of photo speed enforcement. What would this mean for the residents of Morinville? Who better to ask than our local Experts on this subject matter… […]

Letter: Photo radar not about safety

After taking in all the discussion about photo radar, we all must make our own decision, and mine boils down to one factor. Safety.
I’m not talking about a reduction in speeders. If you change a speed limit from 50km/hr to 60km/hr (as was done on 100 Street by No Frills), you’re going to have a reduction in speeders, but that improvement isn’t due to photo radar… […]

Letter: Concerned Photo Radar Citizens respond

There have been quite a number of articles, letters and comments published concerning the upcoming photo radar vote on April 14th in Morinville, with many statistics and other statements made in support of retaining photo radar. Some of these however are questionable. […]

Conservative Views Column: The Semantics of Democracy

by Calli Stromner

While wannabe politicians were in the middle of the tri-annual popularity contest known as the municipal election last October, a slight, soft-spoken Morinville resident was pounding the pavement for a cause. His cause was not to be elected to public office, but rather to compel the Town to significantly alter the way photo enforcement is conducted… […]

Photo Radar Open House draws 80

by Calli Stromner

Morinville – Roughly 80 people attended a public Open House on March 26 to learn more about how photo enforcement is conducted within the Town of Morinville. Council members, town administrators, RCMP officers, and the third-party contractor, Independent Traffic Services (ITS), were all on hand to offer information… […]
