Morinville Blood Donor Clinic set for end of month

Morinville – Canadian Blood Services (CBS) are hoping Morinvillians will roll up their sleeves later this month when the blood donor clinic comes to town.

The summer clinic, sponsored by the Morinville Lions Club and Knights of Columbus, will be held July 27 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Seniors’ Rendez-Vous Centre on 104 St.

Canadian Blood Services Community Development Coordinator Jennifer Gretzan-Melnichuk said the target for the July clinic is 85 blood donations, a goal that remains unchanged from previous clinics held in Morinville. But while the goal may remain the same, the last time CBS was in town 99 blood donations were collected, exceeding the clinic’s target by 14 donations.

Presently the July 27 clinic is 70 per cent booked and Gretzan-Melnichuk said she is hoping more donors will come forward, particularly since there is a great need for blood donors during the summer.

“It’s a particularly challenging time to collect blood,” she said. “Donors change their routine, go on vacations, travel [and] are busy with outdoor activities. Meanwhile, the need for blood does not take a summer vacation.”

Gretzan-Melnichuk said the blood donation process takes approximately one hour from start to finish. Donors must be 17 years of age, in good health and feeling well on the day the donation is made. Full eligibility requirements can be found on the Canadian Blood Services web site – (blood.ca).
