Morinville – A late morning collision closed both lanes of Highway 37 for several hours Thursday and took the life of a 52-year-old man.

Morinville RCMP and Sturgeon County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene of vehicle collision (approximately five kilometres east of Highway 2) around 11 a.m. Sept. 16.

RCMP investigation of the collision indicates that a 2008 Ford Escape travelling west on Hwy. 37 crossed the centre line and struck an eastbound semi-trailer.

The semi appears to have swerved to avoid the SUV and wound up in the north ditch. The semi driver was not injured; however, the 52-year-old male driver of the SUV sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

Highway 37 was reopened in the afternoon after the completion of the investigation and after soil contaminated with diesel fuel had been removed from the north ditch.

RCMP will not be laying charges in relation to this collision.

The name of the deceased is not being released.
