Morinville – Friday night’s Celebrating Life and Culture Gala gave Morinville and area residents a taste of wine and a taste of what the arts and culture scene could be like on a regular basis after the Morinville Community and Cultural Centre opens in early 2011. For Friday night’s event art lovers toured the Morinville RC Parrish Hall, a venue the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation converted into an art gallery for the evening.

The event, a fundraiser for the Sturgeon Hospital’s expanded emergency department, drew a great deal of support from the community and neighbouring communities.

Event coordinator Doug Campbell said 22 artists were represented in the Friday evening show, including four art students from Morinville Community High School. Campbell said participants in the evening’s event had the opportunity to not only enjoy the art but to talk to the artists and possibly buy their work. In fact, one of the art students in the showing, Rory Turner, had several people interested in one of his works, a painting that sold for $400 when put to auction later in the evening.

In addition to the wide range of art styles on hand, participants in the fund raiser were able to take part in a wine tasting, sampling the products of four different wine distributors. Completing the gallery atmosphere was Paul Smith, owner of Smith Music, who played classical guitar as patrons made their way through the gallery.

Morinville Mayor Lloyd Bertschi said he was pleased to see the work of local artists brought together for the fundraiser.

“It’s great to have such an event in town here,” he said, noting that he looks forward to being able to have the event in the new Community Cultural Centre next year. “It’s great to have a different kind of entertainment in the community.”
