It was an active weekend for fundraising Oct. 22 – 24. Here’s a recap of what went on this weekend and a highlight of few things going on in the community this coming week.

Now that’s something to cheer about
The Morinville Titans have had a strong season so far, in no small part due to the efforts of their newly minted cheer squad sponsored by the Morinville Zoo. The Titans supporters braved a cold Saturday evening Oct. 23 to line up in front of the popular Morinville bar to cheer on their team during the Titans Tailgate Party. For $5 patrons and hockey fans received an adult beverage, food, and the sure knowledge they were helping to support Junior C hockey in Morinville. – Stephen Dafoe Photo

Rotary raises some serious coin
Rotary Club of Morinville President Syl Haisan takes a close look at one of several painting by Loren Chabot, each a part of Saturday night’s silent auction portion of the service clubs 14th Annual Charter Night and Social.

A highlight of the evening was the auctioning off of 13 boxes, each containing either a bottle of wine or cognac. Each bottle contained a number. The 13 auction winners then became part of a process of elimination whereby the drawing of their number eliminated them from the competition. The last auction winner standing selected one of a number of high end prizes. The remaining items were then auctioned off. Approximately $14,000 was raised through the bottle box auction alone and Rotary Club President Syl Haissan estimates more than $20,000 was raised during the event. The funds will be used to support Rotary initiatives, including the gazebo project at the Morinville Splash Park and the club’s sponsorship of student leadership trips for high school students.

It takes more than skaters to run a team

Heartland Transmission Project Meeting
The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) will be holding an information session on the Heartland Transmission Project at the Morinville Parish Hall Monday Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The evening will include a presentation about AUC processes and a question and answer period. The merits of the application cannot be discussed during the session.

Blood donor Clinic Tuesday
The Morinville Lions Club and Knights of Columbus will be holding another blood donor clinic from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Seniors’ Rendez-Vous Centre on 104 Street Oct. 26.

The blood donation process takes approximately one hour from start to finish. Donors must be 17 years of age, in good health and feeling well on the day the donation is made. Full eligibility requirements can be found on the Canadian Blood Services web site – (blood.ca).
