Sturgeon County – Morinville and Namao Fire Departments responded to a garage fire early Sunday afternoon but were unable to save the structure or its contents.

The fire, believed to have begun around 2 p.m. Sunday, had already destroyed the garage when fire crews arrived on scene at Township Road 554, approximately one mile west of Cardiff Corners.

“The walls were gone, the roof was gone, the whole ball of wax,” said Morinville Deputy Chief of Operations Ken Thiemann, adding the home owners were unaware of the fire until the power in their home went out. “The heat melted the power wire to the house. It was strung across the garage to their meter box. It melted and that kicked the power out to the house.”

Thiemann said the garage contained a newer-model car, truck, lawn tractor and a quantity of shop tools, all of which were destroyed in the blaze.

although the garage and its contents were destroyed on arrival, fire crews were able to save the home. The deputy chief said Morinville and Namao crews protected the exposures to the home to prevent further damage to the property. “The house had some charring on the windows and the eaves, so it wouldn’t have taken much more and it would have been in the attic,” Thiemann said.

Total value of the damages has not been assessed and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
