Morinville – The MCHS Lady Wolves senior girls’ basketball team took their third straight North Central Banner over the weekend, defeating the John Maland Wildcats in their home gym Saturday night.

Brittany Wilson’s 26 points contributed a large factor in Morinville’s 72-63 victory over Barrhead in their first game of Zones. The Lady Wolves ran into considerable foul trouble, allowing the Gryphons to come within nine points.

In the second game of zones, the Lady Wolves defeated Spruce Grove’s St. Thomas Aquinas High School 63-40. Rebecca Dubord led the charge with 12 rebounds and seven steals during the contest.

In the final the Lady Wolves played and defeated the home team John Maland High School Wildcats in Devon.

“The girls played a fantastic game and held their composure even though they were again in foul trouble,” said Coach Kent Lessard in an e-mail Saturday night. “The team played fantastic defense even though there were five girls with four fouls and one girl fouled out. The girls played with great composure down the stretch to hold onto a slim four-point victory.

Lessard said the victory was a proud moment for the team considering this years team had only two returning players from last year’s team.

Next up for the Lady Wolves is the provincial competition.
