Morinville – Residents have just more than a month to nominate that exceptional person or family they feel are worthy of being recognized as citizen of the year. For the 33rd consecutive year, the Morinville Lions Club will be selecting a recipient for the honour from nominations submitted by the public. Nomination deadline is May 13 and the winner will be announced May 27 at the Volunteer Appreciation Night to be held at the Community Cultural Centre.

The recognition is open to any individual or family who has made a significant contribution to the community and nominations should include how long the nominee has been a resident of Morinville, their group involvement, accomplishments in the past year and past 10 years as well as commentary on the nominee’s commitment and personal involvement in the community.

Lion Francis Fryters said the recipient of the Citizen of the Year award has their name added to the Citizen of the Year trophy, an honour shared with a long line of Morinville residents trailing back more than three decades.

“It is very important to recognize the Citizen of the Year whose doing excellent work for the community,” Fryters said, adding the annual award shows the community’s appreciation for the work. “The Citizen of the Year is chosen by three members of the club and the last year’s Citizen [of the Year].” the 2010 award recipient was Harry Pool.

Fryters explained because the nominations are not viewed until the group gets together to select the winner, all nominations must be sent by mail. Fax and e-mail nominations are not accepted.

“We don’t open them until the committee is there,” Fryters said.
