Legal – While Slave Lake was being evacuated from the path of a 16 hectare wildfire that destroyed a third of the 7,000-resident community, local fire fighters were battling blazes on a smaller scale.

At approximately 1 a.m. Monday Morning, Legal and Morinville crews were called to a residential fire south on 50 Street in Legal.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Proulx said the garage was already fully engulfed when crews arrived and that the fire spread from the burning garage to a neighbouring garage as well as the kitchen and attic of the home where the fire started.

“With the wind there was lots of embers flying all over the place,”Proulx said, adding Morinville was immediately called for assistance and sent their aerial truck. ”With that wind we weren’t quite sure what to expect.”

Proulx said a cause of the fire has not been determined at this time. “It’s still under investigation,” he said. “We figure it started in the garage somewhere, but we’re not really exactly sure what would have caused it at this time.”

A motorhome parked in the driveway was completely destroyed along with the garage. Proulx said much of the structure and contents of the neighbouring garage was also destroyed. Damage to the home in one corner was extensive as the fire attacked the kitchen area and got into the attack.

There were no injuries in the fire, everyone escaping the home safely.

Proulx said a crew in on hand monitoring hot spots in the attic area of the home.
