Morinville – Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Ken Kowalski announced Wednesday plans for the new overpass at Highway 2 and Cardiff Road are underway and that the search is on for a contractor to do the preliminary work.

“Alberta Transportation has started the work process for the new Morinville Overpass over Highway 2 and Cardiff Road by advertising a contract Aug. 15, 2011, for the construction of the temporary detour that will be needed for Phase 1 of the overpass work,” Kowalski said in a press release Wednesday morning. “The contract will close shortly and we expect to see dirt moved for the construction of the temporary detour.”

The MLA said he understands the detour would be an inconvenience for some in the community but was necessary to build the overpass and ensure public safety.

Kowalski said completion of the overpass is still targeted for the fall of 2013. The infrastructure project was announced June 13. Cardiff Corner has been of great concern to Morinville and area residents for several years and has been the scene of many accidents.
