Morinville – Some 450 people packed the Morinville Community Cultural Centre Saturday night for the first Community Christmas party. The successful event was a fundraiser for the Morinville Rotary Club.

“Our club decided we wanted to host a first class celebration of sorts and with the 100th anniversary of the town, the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Canada and our club’s 15th anniversary, we decided to host a business Christmas party complete with our wine auction,” said Rotarian Linda Killian “The wine auction has over the years raised in the $20,000 mark for our club. This year we exceeded $26,000 thanks to the generosity of the business community.”

Profits from the $85-per-head soirée and proceeds from the wine auction will be used in the community. “This year we are going to upgrade our Rotary Park, add benches to the Gazebo at the Splash Park and work with Namao School to upgrade their playground,” Killian explained. “Our international project is in Mexico. The project is called Families of Hope; previously Families at the Dump.”

Killian said the Rotary Club was not sure how the change in event would go or how Morinville and area’s business community would respond to the event. That uncertainty was removed two weeks after tickets went on sale. The event sold out and developed a waiting list.

Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA, the Honourable Ken Kowalski, presented the club a certificate in recognition of the club’s 15 years in Morinville and the organization’s 100th anniversary.
