Morinville – The Union Jack and Jolly Roger got equal billing Tuesday night, but both were upstaged by the cast of roughly 30 MCHS students who brought Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic operetta Pirates of Penzance to the stage for the first of four nights of performances.

The operetta features Brennan Fitzgerald as Frederic, Moira Kelly as Mabel, Rory Turner as the pirate king, Darian Pitre as the Major-General and Christie Grant as the police sergeant, together with 26 other student actors playing single or multiple roles.

Prior to the performance MCHS teacher and Pirates’ director Vanessa King said the production was the school’s most ambitious to date. If the opening night’s performance is any indication, Pirates has proven the school has not bitten off more than it can chew in its quest to be ambitious. From the singing to the set, Pirates comes off as a big production capably managed in the hands of some big local talent.

The play continues nightly through Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 and are available at Sobeys in Morinville of the MCHS office. Tickets are also available at the door.
