New Year’s Eve Gala last blast of centennial year

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – With the remaining days of 2011 getting fewer and fewer, Morinville’s Centennial Committee members are planning to end the community’s 100th anniversary with a high class affair. Committee member Lil Boddez said final preparations are being made for next weekend’s New Year’s Eve Gala at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre.

“It really is the icing on the cake – the finale,” Boddez said, adding throughout the year the committee has tried to do things with a centennial twist. “We’re hoping to have as classy an event as we can have.”

From the décor to the place settings, the New Year’s Eve Gala seeks to send the centennial year off with the level of respect it deserves while providing participants a quality evening on the town.

Boddez explained the New Year’s Eve Gala is not the loud, party favours type event people normally associate with end of year celebrations. Instead, the evening will consist of a plated dinner of prime rib or chicken, followed by musical entertainment from Aura, a six-piece band that plays a wide-variety of music. “They’ve got two vocalists, and they will play anything,” she said. “They’ve got big band sound. They’ll play from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, right up to now.”

But while music will form a substantial part of the evening, both through the band and a DJ, Boddez explained volume levels will be such that those wishing to enjoy each other’s company and conversation will be able to do so without yelling over the music.

Tickets for the dinner and dance are $300 for a table of six or $50 per person. Boddez explained the committee is willing to work with couples and groups on ticket packages and seating accommodations that best work for them.
