Morinville – A lack of snow and warmer weather did not deter a number of Morinville families from getting creative in the snow. This year’s Snowman Competition entries, in keeping with the purpose of the holiday, were tasked with building their snowmen into active family units having fun. Additionally, snowmen arrangements were in keeping with Morinville’s participation in the ChooseWell initiative, a provincial campaign for healthy and active lifestyles.
Mayor Lloyd Bertschi, Councillor David Pattison, and seven-year-old Dorion Okimaw-Trowbridge were among this year’s judges, each scoring entries on a number of criteria.
This year’s first-place winner was the family of Brad and Joyce Herceg. Their entry filled their front yard with snowmen engaged in a wide-variety of activities, including jump roping, bicycling, and even a headstand or two.
The Hercegs next door neighbours, Marie and Gagnon Belanger, took second place in this year’s competition with a hockey-themed arrangement of snowmen.
The family of Melodie and Kevin Steele took third place with their summer-themed arrangement of snowmen on a camping trip. Whether lying on a chaise lounge or roasting snowman-configured marshmallows over an open fire – the Steele’s display was in keeping with the spirit of the competition.
Winners were presented their prizes at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre over the lunch hour Feb. 20.

Nice work by those shown. Very creative and well done. Were there not other entries?
There were five entrants this year. One withdrew because their entry was destroyed by vandals and thus there was nothing to photograph. We made an editorial decision not to run photos of the only entrant not to win.
