Morinville – It was tournament gold for the Sturgeon Novice A Mustangs Mar. 25. The Mustangs defeated the Devon Drillers 8-4 in the final game of the 15th Annual Dennis Blair Borduzak Memorial Tournament. The tournament, which ran Mar. 22-25 in Legal and Morinville, drew together 18 teams (six each in A, B, and C divisions) for four days of tournament hockey.

The Mustangs played strong through the opening and closing frames of the Sunday afternoon finale. The Novice Mustangs lead the Drillers 6-2 in the first period, but remained scoreless in the middle frame, giving up two goals to the Drillers to end the frame with a 6-4 lead. The Mustangs returned to action in the third period, picking up another two goals for their troubles to take the contest 8-4.

Coach Kim Edworthy said he was pleased with the outcome. “I think it went very well,” he said after the finale. “We played Devon all year. At the beginning of the year they beat us and at the end of the year we got better and ended up winning. It’s been a very growing year for this team. We had a wide range of players that ended up playing in Tier 1 this year.”

Although pleased with a tournament victory for his team, Edworthy said he was pleased with the four-day hockey event overall. “I think the kids had fun,” he said. “I think it’s a fantastic tournament.”

The annual tournament, also known as 4 the Love of the Game, is dedicated to the memory of Dennis Blair Borduzak who passed away in 1989 at the conclusion of his Novice year in hockey. The 4 the Love of the Game theme is taken from Borduzak’s jersey number. The tournament originated in Legal and is now played in both communities.

The tournament marked the official end of hockey in Morinville this season. The ice plant was shut off Sunday night and ice is to be removed Monday morning.
