Pinocchio coming to Morinville

Morinville – The stage of the Morinville Community Cultural Centre will be transformed into the hills of sunny Italy May 25 when the Alberta Opera Company bring their musical adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale Pinocchio to town.

The production tells the tale of a lonely puppet maker named Geppetto who is consumed the singular wish to have the company of a son. That wish is fulfilled when his favourite creation, Pinocchio, comes to life.

Cultural Centre Manager Laurie Stalker said the opera company will begin the day next Friday with a performance for school children and follow up with the evening performance at 7:30 p.m.

The 50-minute show includes the talents of Grant MacEwan graduate Madelaine Knight as Pinocchio, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama graduate Byron Martin as Geppetto, and Christopher Scott as Vincenzo.

Pinocchio was adopted for the Alberta Opera Company by playwright Farren Timoteo. Jeff Unger is the artistic director, composer and musical director for the production.

Stalker said there will be some familiar faces on stage and behind the scenes. “The great thing about this show is it involves local people,” Stalker said, adding the Alberta Opera has requested 16 students to assist on stage and behind the scenes. “We’ve put the invitation out to all the schools.”

Tickets are $10 per person and are available at through tixonthesquare.ca, the Morinville Community Cultural Centre box office and at the door.
