Morinville RCMP investigating found human remains

Sturgeon County – Morinville RCMP are investigating the discovery of what is believed to be human remains. The RCMP Detachment was contacted by a surveyor Wednesday morning advising he had discovered what he believed to be human remains in a field in Sturgeon County.

RCMP attended the scene and have confirmed the discovery. A number of support teams are now assisting Morinville RCMP, including Edmonton Major Crimes Unit, Project KARE Investigators; Police Dog Service; Forensic Identification Services and Search and Rescue.

Police do not know at this time how long the remains have been there, nor can police confirm the sex or gender of the deceased at this time.

A ground search of the area is being conducted Thursday and Friday with the deployment of the RCMP’s Special Tactical Operations Team (STO).

UPDATE FRIDAY 5:30 P.M.

RCMP concluded a search near Township Road 552 and Range Road 245 in Sturgeon County where human remains were discovered May 16.

The investigation is continuing and every effort is being made to identify the human remains.

The remains have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner.
