Morinville – Home owners wanting to rent out part of their home will be allowed a little more space to do so if amendments to the Town of Morinville’s Land Use Bylaw (LUB) pass second and third reading this summer. Council gave unanimous first reading to amendments that would increase the maximum floor space for secondary suites to 1,000 square feet so long as the rental accommodations do not exceed the floor space of the principal dwelling.
Morinville’s Director of Planning and Development, Greg Hofmann, in his written agenda presentation said the increase is more practical and in line with the interest his department is receiving from secondary suite applicants.
Additional changes to the LUB include giving the Development Officer authority to decide minor accessory developments, including sheds and other small structures, without the need of bothering Council with the matter of making a decision.
The amendments were requested after several months of implementing provisions in the new bylaw which passed third reading in April. Now that first reading has passed, Council will hold a public hearing on the amendments Aug. 28 before giving the amendments second and third reading.
