Town of Morinville to fund family violence prevention program

Morinville – Town Council approved $5,000 of $8,000 in Community Services Grant requests June 26, accepting a request from The Sturgeon Region Victim Services Unit (VSU) and rejecting a request from Sturgeon Literacy.

The VSU on behalf of Sturgeon Region Family Violence Intervention Committee was awarded a grant request of $5,000 for a family violence prevention program. The program will run for 15 weeks and be offered to 24 participants, six to eight of whom are Morinville residents. Council voted unanimously in approving the request.

Sturgeon Literacy requested $3,000 from the Town for books, computers and software to improve literacy for 34 families and 15 adults, five of whom are Morinville residents; however, the request for funding was rejected on the grounds that Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) are unable to fund literacy projects.

The Community Services Grants are provided by FCSS, a department of the Town of Morinville that is 80 per cent funded by the province. Under the FCSS program, communities are required to design and deliver preventative social programs as well as programs that enhance individual, family and community well-being.

Morinville’s Community Services Grant program has a 2012 budget of $10,000. The June 26 approval to VSU leaves $5,000 in the budget for the program’s second intake of applications.
