Sturgeon County – A 79-year-old man from the Fort Saskatchewan area is dead after a collision Tuesday afternoon.

RCMP responded to a report of a collision between a car and a petroleum truck around noon Aug. 14. The collision took place on Highway 28 at the intersection of Range Road 235 in Sturgeon County.

Police say the deceased’s Subaru Outback crossed Highway 28 at the Range Road 235 intersection and collided with the westbound petroleum truck. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing and police have not yet released the name of the deceased.

Collision sends one to hospital

Police responded to a second Sturgeon County collision Wednesday morning. Constable Yelena Avoine of the Morinville RCMP Detachment said police were called to Range Road 261 and Township Road 554 around 8 a.m. Aug. 15 where a truck travelling north on Range Road 261 collided with a vehicle travelling east on RR 554.

“Both the truck and the car collided at the intersection,” Avoine said. “The truck failed to yield and they collided.”

Avoine said the female driver of the eastbound car suffered minor injuries; however, the driver of the truck, whose vehicle rolled, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ground ambulance.

Charges are pending. The collision is still under investigation.

Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in either Aug. 14’s fatality or in Aug. 15’s collision.
