Jets show some promise in Leduc tournament

Morinville – The Morinville Jets played two of three games this weekend in a tournament in Leduc, winning both contests.

The Jets played the Edmonton Mustangs Friday night and skated away with a 4-3 victory. Saturday’s game was missed due to the funeral services of Morinville Jets Captain Nick McRae. Sunday the Jets played the Stony Plain Flyers and defeated the team 4-1.

The Junior B team has recently been involved in team try outs. Morinville Jets President Brent Melville said the roster has been whittled down to 25 skaters from 36 and down to four goalies from the six who tried out this season.

“We have picked up some quality players that will fill our holes and should make us stronger than last year,” Melville said, adding he cannot mention any specific player names just yet.

The Jets continue training camp this week ahead of the start of the regular season. The Jets first take to the ice Sept. 21 in a road game against the Flyers. The club’s first home game is Sept. 23 against the Spruce Grove Regals. Game time is 6:45 p.m. at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
