Morinville Jets open season with mixed results

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – The Jets entered the Capital Junior Hockey League’s 2012/2013 season with one win and one loss. The club pulled off a 5-2 win over the Stony Plain Flyers Friday night and followed it Sunday night with a 6-4 deficit with the Spruce Grove Regals. Although Sunday night’s contest was a home game, fans had to travel to Servus Place in St. Albert to see it due to a lack of ice in Morinville’s rink.

Flyers deprived

Friday night’s road game to Stony Plain resulted in the Jets first two points of the season, an easy 5-2 win over the bottom team in the league last year. The Jets scored 25 seconds after the opening faceoff and built their victory with two goals in each of the first two periods, capping the win with a fifth in the third. Veteran Nick Pratt earned two of the club’s five.

Hard fight with Regals

Sunday night’s contest against the Regals began with a 2-1 lead for the Jets at the end of the first, but the Regals kept the Jets scoreless in the middle frame and brought the game to a 2-2 tie. The third period saw the Jets fall behind 5-4 by the closing minutes of the period. Pulling their backstop for extra strength in the hopes of forcing overtime, the Jets ended up giving up a sixth goal on an empty net.

The Jets take to the road for two games this week, Friday night against the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks and Sunday against the Edmonton Mustangs. Both games are 8 p.m. starts at the home team’s respective arenas.
