Morinville – Students and past students took to the stage of the Morinville Community Cultural Centre Thursday night for the high school’s annual award gala. Master of ceremonies Mr. Laverne Dewald said this year’s awards night included the presentation of 283 awards with a cash value of $85,510.
Below are a couple highlights of the evening.
Corinna Cormier presents the Art 30 Award to Rory Turner on behalf of Creative Design Framing. Turner also received several other awards: The Music 30 Award, Drama 30 Award and the Grade 12 Honours Award. A new award, the MCHS Building Futures Award, was also presented to the MCHS graduate. The award recognizes a grade 12 student who has consistently supported the MCHS community with honesty, integrity and genuine service. The MCHS HOWLS Award, given to a student who has “Walked the Talk” regarding the school’s positive behaviour plan, was Turner’s final award of the evening.
A new award, the Peter Gibeault Lion Quest award was presented to Kyrsti MacDonald by Colleen Turner of the Morinville Lions Club. This award is presented to the Grade 10 or 11 student who is willing to participate in all aspects of community volunteer duties as directed through the school. MacDonald also received a monetary award and a medal for first place in the Canadian Mathematics Cayley Competition for Grade 10, the Joelle Cloutier Memorial Award, Personal Growth in Humanities Award for English 10-1, and the Phil Whiting Memorial Award for Math 10 Common. She was one of the 38 students who received the Grade 10 Honours Award.
The Jonathan James Senger Memorial Scholarship is presented to one male and one female Grade 12 student who are pursuing their educational goals and attending a post-secondary institution. The $1,000 award was presented to Leigh Freethy and Amy Constantin. Accepting the award from Debbie Senger (center) are Constatin’s brother Evan and Freethy’s mother Michelle. Both recipients are away at school.
Constantin was also awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal and was one of 29 to receive the Grade 12 Honours Award. Evan Constantin received the Religious Studies 15 Award and was one of 38 to receive a Grade 10 Honours Award.
The Morinville Historical and Cultural Society Scholarship, a new award, was presented by Solange Bachand, Vice-President of the Morinville Historical and Cultural Society to Colette Bachand who also received the Visual Arts Award and was one of 31 recipients of the Alberta Heritage Scholarships Fund Alexander Rutherford Scholarships and one of 29 to receive a Grade 12 Honour Award.
Brennan Fitzgerald was presented the Premier’s Citizenship Award by Principal Todd Eistetter. The award is sponsored by the Government of Alberta and is presented to a grade 12 student in recognition of their outstanding achievements in citizenship, leadership, community service and volunteer work. Fitzgerald also received the Drama “Behind the Scenes” Award, the MCHS Student Council Service Award, and was one of 31 who received the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund Alexander Rutherford Scholarship and one of 29 to receive the Grade 12 Honours Award.
