Morinville – The Morinville Youth Basketball Association sent three teams to Youth Provincials this past weekend. The Mini Boys, coached by Jody Hessel, and the Bantam Girls, coached by Serge Froment, represented Morinville at the games. Both teams enjoyed their first visit to provincials knowing there are many more to come.
The Midget girls also coached by Serge Froment went to Calgary this past weekend and for the third straight season were crowned provincials champs. They played four games.
They won their first game against Southeast Swarm from Edmonton 60-47, won their second game against Cochrane Kodiaks 54-18, and took their third game and semifinal against a Calgary Div. 1 team 48-34. The final for provincial gold was played against against heated rival Beaumont. The game ended tied 37-37 after regulation. This game was the fourth time this year these teams battle and this game was a defensive war where every basket and bruise was earned. An overtime of three minutes or first team to four points started with a tip off and was won by Larissa VanBrabant and after a perfectly executed play, Suzanne weaved her way through for a beautiful lay-up, two points. Beaumont, unable to penetrate inside, took a long outside shot and missed. A Morinville rebound by Hannah Froment, outlet to Suzanne and pass to Larissa led to a foul and two free throws. Both were made, giving Morinville its third straight provincial title. Parents, friends and family erupted in celebration.
This win extended the Roar Runners winning streak to 62 games in a row and they finished their second consecutive season undefeated also capturing their third straight City Championship the previous week. A truly amazing team and incredible effort secured each win.
