Volunteer Appreciation week underway in Morinville

volunteer night 1

Morinville – Building on the theme Volunteers Cast a Beautiful Shadow, the Town of Morinville will be spending the week showing how volunteers spread throughout the community like a shadow across a field.

The Morinville Community Cultural Centre will play host to an open house from Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. where information on local community groups will mesh with refreshments and local art displays.

The casual week of recognition will culminate with the annual Volunteer Appreciation Evening Friday night at the cultural centre.

Morinville’s Family and Community Support Services Coordinator Karin Debenham said this year’s awards nomination call resulted in more than 50 nominations. The nomination committee met last Wednesday afternoon to score the nominees on the strengths of the information provided by nominators. Debenham said all nominees would be called prior to the event for a formal invite.

Allen Jacobson, Morinville’s Community Development Coordinator / Event and Volunteer Specialist, has been working with Debenham on the event and has lined up a number of local entertainers to show off the community’s talents between groups of awards.

Jacobson said the Apr. 26 event would include a meet and greet with light food and refreshments from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled to run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will be followed by a meet and greet until 9 p.m. In keeping with the shadow theme for this year, a shadow puppet workshop for children will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Additionally, there will be art displays and entertainment throughout the event.

There is no charge for the event and all are invited to attend the awards evening.
