Morinville – A new location and a new governing organization are in store for the Morinville Farmers’ Market this season. Recently taken over by the Morinville Festival Society, the weekly produce and product market will move to the Ray McDonald Sports Centre’s parking lot (9908 – 104 Street) when the market reopens for the season June 7.

Market Manager Korien Sampson said she was excited to have the market under the Festival Society’s umbrella because it means bigger and better things for the market as a whole. “It allows the market to become a more central part of Morinville and all its amazing festivals,” she said, adding she feels the move to the arena parking lot provides a better venue for the Farmers’ Market because it will be visible from Main Street and situated right beside the busy splash park. “It will also provide more vendor space and more parking for customers.”

Sampson said she is hoping to have more than 20 vendors when the season starts June 7. Sixteen vendors are currently signed up with more coming in. Sampson said anyone who makes, bakes or grows produce or products can rent a table at the weekly market.

Events planned

In addition to a solid sampling of vendors, the Farmers’ Market is looking to continue its recent tradition of adding entertaining events to create a carnival atmosphere to the market. Sampson is planning the 2nd Annual Street Performers Festival for July 19 and the 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off for Sept. 13. Sampson is also planning something she is calling the Morinville Country Fair Bench Show and Exhibition for Aug. 17.

Festival Society Chair Paul Smith said the continuation of existing market entertainment events and the addition of others is in keeping with the mission of the Morinville Festival Society. “The purpose of the society is to bring quality festivals to Morinville in every season. Having the Farmers’ Market under our umbrella allows us to bring that market atmosphere into our festivals and to bring some of our festival atmosphere into the market.”

The Morinville Farmers’ Market will be open every Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The market begins June 7th and continues until Sept. 27. For more information on the market or booking a stall, contact Farmers’ Market Manager Korien Sampson at 780-934-2379.
