Morinville – One might be forgiven for thinking the Morinville Community Library’s programs consist of people sitting around a circle talking about the merits of the latest in literary fiction. While the monthly Between the Covers Book Club is a popular library program, it is but one of 15 programs being offered by or hosted at the library this fall. In addition to programs for readers and programs for writers, the library offers craft programs, movie evenings and an opportunity to learn Spanish, French or yoga.

“We’ve got programs running pretty well every day here,” said Morinville Community Library Assistant Manager Cheryl Pasechnik, adding it is becoming more and more difficult to find open space in the library’s program room.

The assistant manager said the addition of a larger program room as part of the Town’s renovations to Civic Plaza and the library has paid dividends in terms of being able to provide more variety for patrons and residents. “We only used our program room for the quilting club, summer reading and story time,” Pasechnik said of previous room. “Now it is pretty much every day that there is something going on, sometimes two or three things. Every month is different, but the fall is pretty well every day.”

Returning after summer hiatus are the library’s three craft programs: The Loose Threads Quilting Club, running the first and third Monday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m., Knit Wits, running the first and third Tuesday from 6:30 – 8 p.m., and the Scrap That Card Club, running the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 – 8 p.m. Creative types of all ages can participate in the library’s Lego Club, which runs the first Wednesday of the month from 6 to 7 p.m.

Movies popular

The library has had great response with its movie program, an opportunity for children and their parents to spend the afternoon or evening watching a movie together.

“They’ve been just awesome because we do it on a professional development day so the parents can come,” Pasechnik said of the Kidz Flicks program, noting the events run in the afternoons or evenings and are open to parents and children. In addition to the film, families can buy pizza, pop and other snacks for the show. “It’s something for parents to take the kids to. It’s in town and it’s a sort of cheap date night with the kids.”

The program has been full each time the library has run it. Because of licensing regulations the program is only available to Morinville Community Library cardholders. The popularity of the program among patrons has prompted the library to spin the program off into a movie night for adults. Pasechnik said the adult version has also been well received.

Programs for book lovers as well

Beyond the crafts and cinema events, the library is offering two programs this fall to help patrons interested in making the switch from the printed page to the digital page. An E-Reader Newbie Workshop is planned for Sept. 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and an E-Reader Troubleshooting Workshop is set for Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Not all library activities are in the library and not all activities in the library are library programs. A teen book club and teen writers’ program take place at the Green Bean on 100 Street, and the library’s program room is used for both Career Employment and Counselling Services programing and the Morinville Community Gardens monthly meetings.
