Leukemia walk ready to Light the Night

Morinville – A fundraising walk is set for Oct. 18 at the Morinville Fish and Game Association pond trail. The roughly 4-kilometre Light the Night Walk in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada will depart from the pond at roughly 7 p.m. and take about 90-minutes to complete. Participants will carry lit lanterns on their trek.

Organizer Courtney Duchesne said she was motivated to organize the event because of her father’s illness. “They started a new program where you can host your own walk in any community,” she said. “I decided to do that because my dad has both cancers. He has leukemia and he has cancer of his lymph nodes. It kind of hit home for me. We’re going to do this.”

Duchesne said walkers would have two options, both starting with a loop around the pond. One path will go down the east trail to 100 Street, a second will continue on across 100 Street and on down the trail towards Georges H. Primeau School and back.

Duchesne said there are already about 40 people scheduled to participate in the Oct. 8 event, but more are welcomed. Those interested in participating can pick up a donation sheet at This & That, located near Tim Hortons. “People can go around to friends and family,” Duchesne said, adding she and her daughter have been going door-to-door seeking pledges for their walk. “If it is more than $25, they get a tax receipt. A lot of people are going for that option.”
