Letter: Supporting our Filipino Community

Dear Editor,

With the massive destruction of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, it is times like these that we are reminded just how blessed we are to live in this great country. The full extent of this horrific storm is not yet known and many of our community members are watching helplessly as news reports stream in.

The Government of Canada has sent its Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to the Philippines to aid in the emergency response, equipped with essential items and equipment. Our government has also committed to match all donations made by Canadians to registered charities responding to the crisis.

We have welcomed many Filipinos into our community and they have become good friends and neighbours to many. I would like to take this opportunity to reach out to those whose families may be impacted by Typhoon Haiyan. I invite anyone with questions or concerns to contact my office at 780-614-6440 or to stop in, we are here to help.

Relatives and friends seeking information on Canadian citizens believed to be in the affected areas can also contact the Emergency Watch and Response Centre by calling 1-800-387-3124 or 613-996-8885. They may also send an email to sos@international.gc.ca.

My deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones as a result of this devastating natural disaster; my thoughts and prayers are with you.

God Bless,
