Morinville – There will be 50 warm heads this winter thanks to the generosity of a bunch of Knit Whits. The humourously-named knitting group has once again turned their talents to a good cause, donating 50 toques to the Midstream Support Society to be given to those in need.

“The toques are to be donated and not sold,” said member Linda Truhn. “All the yarn was donated and these toques were a group effort. They were intentionally made for members of the community that are less fortunate and in need. The toque project started a few months ago to do something and keep it in the community.”

Member Kathrinn Rothlisberger said she could knit a toque in one hour, whereas Bonnie Dubois said she is better with crochet; she can make two hats in a day, and last year she made 26 hats.

Truhn said the Knit Whits are hoping to do a project every year and that next year’s project may involve scarves. They are always looking for donations of good yarn in good quanties, not bits and pieces. Donations can be dropped off at the Morinville Community Library during operating hours.

The Knit Wits have a reservoir of to-do projects and partake in a variety of activities as a group. They also donate items to the library for their silent auctions, which aids in purchasing new items for the library.

The club has existed since 2009 and meet at the library the first and third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. They currently have more than 20 members ranging in age from 4 to 70. Truhn said membership in the Knit Whits is free, all one needs do is bring their own needles and yarn. They do not teach knitting, but have experienced mentors in the group that can assist newer knitters with their work.
