Morinville – The Morinville Kings received word this week they will host the Senior AA/A Hockey Provincial Championships next March. The championships will feature the league winners of the Ranchland Hockey League, North Peace Hockey League, North Central Hockey League, Saskatchewan / Altberta Hockey League and the Battle River Hockey League, as well as the Okotoks Drillers who play in the Chinook AAA Hockey League, one wild card position, and the Host Morinville Kings.

Word of the provincials coming to Morinville came a month after the t he Morinville Kings Senior AA hockey club submitted a bid to Hockey Alberta to host the event. The Kings were up against three other clubs who also submitted bids to host the championships.

“This is an exciting time for the Morinville Kings organization, especially with the fact this is their first season of play and this is the biggest event of all,” said team president Wayne Gatza, adding he believed the event is the Stanley Cup of Senior AA hockey. “It will help the organization grow and attract more interest plus fan support within the region.” Gatza went on to say he believed the event would showcase to the rest of the Province what a great community Morinville is with respect to its businesses and people. “I am very proud today that Hockey Alberta has selected our Hockey Club and Community as the Host site for the 2014 Investors Group Hockey Alberta Provincials for the Senior AA/A,” he said. “Our players all also extremely excited that we will play in the 2014 Provincial Tournament that will feature some very good hockey players.”
