The Morinville Jets hit the ice to face the two toughest teams in the league over the weekend – the West Division’s top-ranked St. Albert Merchants, and the East Division’s first-placed Fort Saskatchewan Hawks. The Jets fell 7-4 to the Merchants in St. Albert Friday night, but defeated the Hawks 8-3 on home-ice Sunday evening. The win and loss bring the Jets record to 16-16-2 this season and moves the club up from fifth slot in the Capital Junior Hockey League’s West Division, a solid enough placement to ensure the Jets will take to the ice for the first round of CJHL playoffs in February.
The Jets take a break from games this week, returning to ice Feb. 2 for a road game against the Spruce Grove Regals. The club play back-to-back home games Feb. 4 and 7, both at 8:30 p.m., then end the season on the road Feb. 9.
Scholarship to be presented
The Jets Feb. 7 home game will be a special night for the club. The Jets will present the Nick McRae Scholarship in honour of the Morinville Jet veteran who was killed Sept. 3, 2012 in an ATV accident south of Edson. The annual scholarship is awarded to a Morinville Jet apprenticing in a trade as McRae did. Proceeds from the Feb. 7 50/50 draw will be allocated to the Nick McRae scholarship fund. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
