Legal athlete headed to world championships

Ottawa – Wheelchair Basketball Canada announced May 22 that Legal resident Arinn Young had been named to the Canadian Senior Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team for the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship. Young replaces Erica Gavel, who is unable to compete due to injury, and will represent Canada at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto from June 20 to 28.

Young, a resident of Legal and a 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Morinville Community High School, is the youngest member of the Senior Women’s National Team and plays for the Edmonton Inferno club team, a club Young helped lead the to a women’s national club championship in 2013. She is currently in Toronto with Team Canada until June 1.

The 2014 Women’s World Championship, set to be the in history, will feature the top 12 teams in the world. Canada is defending bronze medallist, competing for their seventh consecutive podium finish.

Canada opens the tournament June 20 against Japan.
