Morinville RCMP Warn of CRA phone scam

by Morinville News Staff

Morinville RCMP are making residents aware that a Canada Revenue Agency phone scam is once again active in the region. Police say the scam involves someone calling a resident and claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller then demands money for overdue taxes and threatens arrest if the request is denied.

The scammers are known to use aggressive language in an effort to intimidate their would-be victim into handing over personal and credit card information stating they could be arrested if they don’t pay up.

“We have received numerous complaints from residents about this particular scam over the last few weeks,” said Corporal Chantale Mailloux in a press release issued by the Town of Morinville Tuesday afternoon. “Do not reveal any personal information, including PIN or credit card numbers. If you receive such a call, hang up and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.”

Residents looking for information on this and other active scams are encouraged to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or by calling the toll free number at 1-888-495-8501.
