A Morinville Community High School student was airlifted to a hospital in Edmonton after an early morning vehicle-cyclist collision on 100 Avenue, near Aspen House.

RCMP and emergency responders arrived at the scene on 100 Avenue and 97 Street around 8 a.m.

Police say an eastbound pickup struck a young male on his bicycle travelling north on 97 Street as he was heading to school. The student was transported to hospital via STARS Air Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP say speed and alcohol were not factors in the collision. The collision remains under investigation.

Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools quickly issued a release to media and notification to parents Monday morning, advising of the incident.

Superintendent David Keohane said the family had been notified, and the District put a critical response team on site at MCHS to support students. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in wishing the student a full recovery,” Keohane said in the note.

The RCMP point out the importance of cyclists wearing a helmet while riding.

“Statistics supports the fact that wearing a helmet is one of the best interventions for reducing cyclist injuries,” said Staff Sergeant Riz Suleman, Detachment Commander. “We also wish to remind motorists to be cautious when driving in school areas. It’s back to school time, and we need to keep road safety in mind.”
