vball1Three straight wins put the Junior Boys on the path to zone victory.

The North Central 3J/4J Volleyball Zones took place at Morinville Community High School Nov. 17. The Junior boys, who have had a solid season this year with a 21-2 record in league play, took gold in the final game Tuesday night.

The Junior Boys swept through three round robin games, defeating Mayerthorpe 25-17 and 25-13 before taking down the Holy Redeemer Rebels 25-17 and 25-22. The boys played their final round robin game against RF Staples and won 25-17 / 25-21.

Although eight missed serves helped put them on the downside of a 25-22 opening set against Edson, the Wolves came back from a 24-22 second set to win 26-24. The boys took the semi-final in the third set with a 15-11 win.

The Wolves played Neerlandia in the final, a team who defeated them in the final at the Westlock tournament. In Tuesday night’s final, the boys lost their first set 25-13 but won the second set against the Eagles handily at 25-15. A 15-11 third, lead by Chris Ogie’s blocking, shut down the Eagles and gave the Jr. Wolves their zones victory.

Coach Kent Lessard said he was pleased with the season’s success.

“The Jr. Wolves won five out of six tournaments this season,” he said. “They finished second in the other tourney. We were lead by some experienced players: Andrew Seguin, Evan Kohut, Carter Hills and Chris Ogie. The rest of the players showed tremendous improvement. The boys worked very hard and have grown into a close team.”

The Wolves will now travel to Bellerose High School to take their chance at winning the SAPEC final.

The Jr. Girls also took their respective Zones in Mayerthorpe Tuesday. Game results were not available as of Tuesday morning.
