Sixteen Novice teams from as far away as Bonnyville and Camrose will hit the ice this weekend for the 19th Annual Dennis Blair Borduzak Tournament, which runs in Morinville and Legal from Jan. 21 to 24.

“A team of 20 volunteers has been working since September to set up our tournament which will include four teams from SHC and 12 teams from surrounding communities,” said Adam Scharmann, Novice Director for the Sturgeon Hockey Club in an email to Morinville News. “I expect the tournament to bring over 400 visitors to both communities throughout the weekend.”

Each team will play four games during the tournament, and a professional DJ will introduce players with a light show and individual introductions Saturday.

Scharmann said in addition to Morinville and Legal coming through with in-kind donations of ice time, the local business community has also come through in a big way once again this year. “Their generous contributions will once again allow us to pay tribute to a young man who passed away tragically a number of years ago,” he said.

The annual 4 the Love of the Game Tournament is dedicated to the memory of Dennis Blair Borduzak, who passed away following his Novice year of hockey in 1989.

The tournament’s theme – 4 The Love of the Game – is an homage to Dennis Blair Borduzak’s number 4 jersey number.

The player is remembered for his bright eyes, smile and his enthusiasm for the game as well as his understanding that working together as a team was the only way to achieve a common goal.

The Borduzak family will be at the Legal Arena on Sunday afternoon to help present medals to participants. Every player gets a medal in the tournament.
