Senior Girls take silver in 22nd Annual Home Tournament

It was a silver-medal weekend for the Morinville Community High School Wolves Senior Girls basketball team.

The girls swept the tournament with two straight wins before falling in the championship game by a 25-point margin.
The road to victory began Friday morning with a 79-33 win over R. F. Staples. In that contest, the Senior Girls advance from a solid 23-7 first quarter lead to a 40-20 lead at the half. That margin widened to 65-25 after three and 79-33 when the buzzer sounded.

Suzanne VanBrabant lead the scoring for the Wolves with 13 points, followed by and Shayla Kachnic with 10 points.
Friday’s smooth win put the Senior Girls on the path to face John Maland High School in Devon.

That match proved to be much tougher competition for the team. After trailing Maland 12-10 after the first quarter, the Senior Girls started to build a narrow lead in their favour, bouncing back to head the game at 3-29 at the half, and 43-40 after three. The final quarter saw the girls seal it with a six-point margin at 57-51.

Larissa VanBrabant lead scoring for the Wolves with 21 points.

Saturday night’s gold-medal championship put the Senior Girls up alongside Edmonton Christian.

The girls entered that contest trailing Edmonton 15-9 after one and 25-19 at the half. That gap widened to 33-23 after three and 54-29 after four.

John Maland played Wetaskiwin in the third place final. Maland beat Wetaskiwin 57-50 to take bronze in the tournament.

The Senior Boys Home 22nd Annual Home Invitational takes place Feb. 12 and 13.
