2015 saw a large increase in the number of drivers charged with travelling at excessive speeds in the Fort McMurray area, according to to the Wood Buffalo Integrated Traffic Unit (ITU).
Last year Wood Buffalo ITU laid 287 court mandatory charges for motorists driving more than 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit. That number is 17 per cent higher than 2014. Police say the ITU also laid another 6,200 other speeding tickets.
Police cite a 54-year-old Fort McMurray resident who was found guilty Feb. 12 of speeding more than 50 km/h over the limit and was given 14 days in jail as a reminder that speeding can result in more than a mandatory court appearance and ticket.
Police say many other drivers have been issued 90-day driving suspensions and a fine of $2,000 with an additional $300 victim impact fee.
What about slowing traffic down or blocking traffic or don’t know how to use our fancy turning lane in the industrial area ?…. just saying.
