It was a ‘60s thing

Alberta beef, the music of the Beatles, and beer were on the menu for the first Champion Regional Series event. The evening out took place Apr. 9 at the Morinville Rendez-Vous Centre and drew an audience of about 30.

Musician Paul Smith said they chose music of 1960s musical icons the Beatles for the first show because of their near-universal appeal.

Smith was joined by three other regional musicians to bring the music of the Beatles’ decade-long catalogue to the stage.

Those musicians did not offer a Beatles impersonation show with bowl cuts and 1960s clothes. Rather, it was a group of regional musicians putting their own spin on the music.

Putting a regional twist on Beatles music was not the only flavour planned for the event. Chef Doug Adsit’s staff from the Green Bean provided an English buffet ahead of the show featuring Alberta beef, Yorkshire pudding, chicken and all the trimmings. Keeping with Champion’s philosophy, Adsit and staff sourced fresh regional ingredients.
The theme and date for the next Champion Regional Series has not yet been determined.
