Team Alberta has selected Sturgeon County resident Alex Sorochan for the Team Alberta lacrosse team. The 14-year-old Grade 8 Namao School student will head to Nationals in Saskatoon August 1 to 7.

The Cardiff area resident has been playing the sport for five years and currently plays for the St. Albert Rams Bantam A team.

“It just the speed and fast pace of the game,” he said, “It never stops. It always keeps going. It’s a good team sport. You get lots of time with your friends, and it’s just a good sport.”

His introduction to lacrosse came at the age of nine through a family friend.

“I had a family friend who is a very strong lacrosse player. She said, ‘You’ve got to try this out.’ She gave me my first stick and I started playing that way.”

He’s never looked back.

Two years ago Sorochan and his team won playoffs and provincials and ended up fourth in provincials last year. This year he said the team was also doing well.

The process of becoming a part of Team Alberta started with trying out for the team, and making it through the cuts as the Team whittled down to the players it will take on the road this summer. The final cuts came after a camp weekend in Calgary with four sessions. Sorochan found he made the team in mid-May and said he was pleased.

“It was a great feeling to know I’ll be representing Alberta,” Sorochan said. “I’ve tried out for a couple of years, and this is finally my year. It’s a good feeling.”

Sorochan said he hoped to turn his love of lacrosse into a scholarship. He is hoping to one-day study law and play major league lacrosse.

“That’s where I’d like to go,” he said. “That’s the goal, but it takes a lot of work to get there.”

Team Alberta Lacrosse has a roster of 18 runners and two goalies, and Sorochan will play in the Minor Nationals Tournament this summer.
