County resident Jim Baker brought Summer Music in the Park back to the St. Jean Baptiste church grounds in Morinville July 19. The first of three events set for this summer kicked off with Edmonton singer-songwriters: Beth Portman, Kevin Smith, and Alex Boudreau.
The trio performed for a small but enthusiastic audience. Last year’s opening show was cancelled due to rain, but this iteration of the opening show had plenty of sun shining down for 90 minutes of music.
Portman normally plays with her band Beth Portman and the Good Find. The July 19 show saw Portman going solo, but bringing along her guitar player Kevin Smith, who also performed some solo work. Rounding out the opening show was Alex Boudreau.
The bi-weekly outdoor shows take place on Tuesdays at St. Jean Baptiste Church by the clock tower. Alternate Tuesdays will serve as the raincheck day. The shows run from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and while admission is free, they are taking donations for Sturgeon Victim Services.
Organizer Jim Baker has two more events planned for August. The Aug. 2 performers are Dana Wylie and Jim and Penny Malmberg. The final show on Aug. 16 sees local singer-songwriter Jan Baker and Bob Jahrig take to the stage below the clock tower.

I didn’t even hear about this before – Darn!
We ran a story on it about two weeks ago. It’s a pretty cool event, but there are two more coming up and well worth seeing.
Good to know thank you!
