A ray of sunshine rises over Morinville

A 12-year-old Morinville gardener wowed judges in the Best Gardens Contest so much in 2014; they made a special category on the spot to reward the boy. He followed up with another win the next year but stayed away from competing this year because he said he “wanted to give someone else a chance.”

But it has not stopped Jakob D’Aoust’s vegetable garden from impressing neighbours and passersby.

D’Aoust continues to grow a robust garden of greens, tomatoes, beans, corn, cucumbers and even some giant sunflowers.

This year’s efforts included some sunflowers that tower at nearly three times D’Aoust’s height. This year’s blooms peaked at just under 13 feet tall.
