RCMP offering Women in Policing career presentation

by Morinville News Staff

The RCMP is looking for motivated and dedicated women to join their team, and are holding a special recruiting presentation for women Nov. 29.

Though women have made significant contributions as RCMP officers since 1974, currently only 21.5 per cent of RCMP police officers are women. The RCMP say they are committed to increasing the number of female officers to 30 per cent to better represent communities across the country.

RCMP Constable Penelope Gavin says a career with the RCMP offers the chance to have a daily positive impact on Canadian communities.

“Female and male police officers bring different perspectives to policing that provide a balanced approach to resolving problems and developing relationships with the communities we serve,” Gavin said. “We believe that the more diverse we are when it comes to gender, ethnic background, religion or sexual orientation, the better we are able to serve all Canadians.”

The RCMP say the Nov. 29 presentation in Edmonton is a unique opportunity to meet with recruiters and hear real-life career experiences from female police officers. Participants will also learn the process to apply, the benefits and rewards of a career in policing, and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Organizers say employment with the RCMP offers competitive salary and benefits, guaranteed employment after graduation, more than 150 career specializations, paid cadet training, and the opportunity to select their home province for their first post following graduation.

The presentation will take place Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at K Division Headquarters (11140 – 109 Street, Edmonton).
