Workers will have up to five days of job protection a year for personal sickness or short-term care of an immediate family member if the government’s new Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act passes. Additionally, the Act would also allow for 16 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for long-term illness or injury.

Barry Turner is eyeing that position though—well, maybe. Some on council have decided they will run again, and some have decided they will not. The Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act would support family-friendly workplaces and bring Alberta’s standards into alignment with the rest of Canada, the government said Wednesday.

The government says the proposed changes are the result of previous government reviews as well as consultations with Albertans in a variety of sectors. More than 7,000 submissions were received.
