RCMP warn of credit card fraud at local business

submitted by RCMP

On August 23 and August 25, 2017 suspects entered a local business in the Town of Morinville to commit fraud by purchasing goods using an admin card. On August 23rd two male suspects were involved (see attached photograph), and on August 25th one male suspect was involved.

Suspects are using admin cards to do fraudulent credit transactions. Cashiers should be on the lookout for persons typing more then 4 digits into the keypad.

The investigation continues; however, if anyone has any information in regards the frauds or can identify possible suspects, please contact the Morinville RCMP at 780-939-4520. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or at www.crimestoppers.ab.ca . If the information provided at Crime Stoppers is used to assist in an arrest or recovery of property, you may be eligible for a cash reward.

Editor’s Note: Admin cards are used by the operators of the machines themselves. It is what a store owner uses to override the system to manually enter a CC number. In this type of fraud, the admin card is used – chip doesn’t work, so they tell the shopkeeper they need to swipe it. They then swipe it, and enter a stolen CC number they have obtained (say from a vehicle). This is why police ask store owners to watch for more than 4 numbers being entered.

  1. So this is news worthy and the cops obviously care about this crime but what about all of the car hopping and bottle thefts lately. ? More than likely it’s the same group of people . Doesn’t this deserve to be looked into as well ? Maybe even news worthy?

  2. Trina Roberts – we added the above to the end of the article. Thanks for asking, as I’m sure a lot of people would not be familiar with Admin cards outside of those who use them.

    • But you’d notice if someone was typing in a full cc number… hence what the rcmp is asking people to look out for. Rarely do people have more than a 4 digit pin. So anything beyond that is logical to be suspicious of
